Fishing in Riudoso

This past weekend, J took me fishing in Riudoso for my birthday. For those that don’t know me, I truly love to fish so this was one of the most perfect trips he could have planed for us. This was a last minute trip, we didn’t find a place to stay until Thursday so our choices were limited. I had wanted to stay in a cabin but they were booked up, so we ended up staying in a hotel in Riudoso Downs.
Riudoso is a vacation spot up in the Sierra Blanca mountain range in southern New Mexico. It’s only a couple of hours outside of Las Cruces but it is completely different from where we live. The area we live in is more of a desert terrain but up in Riudoso there are trees, lakes and grass. The temp’s are also alot lower, at night it get’s a little chilly. During the summer months you can fish, hike or go horseback riding. During winter you can go to Sky Apache, which is the area’s sky lodge. I’m not quite sure if this is accurate or not, but it claims to be the southern most sky site in the US.
Anyway, we got there Friday evening, on my birthday and checked into our hotel. We ended up staying at the Day’s Inn in Riudoso Downs, which is next to the town of Riudoso. Now, everyone probablyknows that the Day’s Inn chain of hotels are not the most lux. But, it suited our purposes and it really drove home the point of making early reservations! The room was clean and the mattress was new so it really wasn’t that bad. We managed to make the most of it but we won’t be doing that again!
Saturday morning we got up really early and loaded up the Tribute and headed out. We fished out of a private l
ake on the Mescalero Tribal Reservation. It was just gorgeous! After we got our fishing permit, we drove around to the far side of the lake, parked, and made our way down the trail. There were a couple of guys who were already out at the lake and I could tell they watched us as we tried to make our way across the marsh. I am so glad J had me pack our work boots because we went through some really nasty muck. It was worth it though, we had a great spot with a little shade. We set up our chairs and J got our lures and bait out. Our bait consisted of a can of corn, which made me wonder if we would catch anything! I had wanted to get other types of bait but J had insisted that the corn would do the trick. Before we made our first cast, I asked J if he thought we’d have any luck. He admitted that he didn’t know but even if we didn’t catch a thing, we would have a good time. Later on, I wondered how I could ever have doubted him!
I cast first and almost immediately had a bite and before I knew it, was reeling in our first catch! It was a pretty little trout, about 10 inches long, give or take. I was so excited! I could tell J was as well, he really struggled to get the hook out but he managed. Once he got my trout on the stringer, he cast and instantly had one on HIS line! That’s how it went for the first hour or so, one after another, they just jumped on our lines! Some we kept, alot we threw back becuase they were too little. We ended up keeping 8, I lost track of how many we threw back in. The other folks who were fishing did not have near the luck that we had. The two guys who were there when we arrived were a little put out as they had not caught a single fish. We could hear them talking (it was so quiet on the lake) about the different bait they had tried. One of which was some kind of “power” bait! They finally called out to us, asking what we were using. I felt a surge of pride at J’s knowledge in the ways of the Trout!
As more people started arriving at the lake, the strikes beca
me farther and farther apart. We finally packed up around 10:30 or so and went back to the hotel room to clean up. We decided that we needed to clean the fish so J gutted the fish in the sink. I helped by holding the bag with the fish. I felt so guilty about what we were doing that when the maids came by to clean up the room, I almost didn’t open the door! I don’t know why I felt so guilty, we really weren’t doing anything wrong. It just felt wrong to be cutting up fish in the sink.
Once J had all the fish properly gutted, we packed them in bags and put them in the room’s fridge. We cleaned up and decided to go get something to eat. We were both pretty hungry. The danish from the “continental” breakfast just didn’t last very long. So, on the recommendation from a friend, we decided to get some barbeque at a place called ‘Can’t Stop Smokin’“. It was ok, not as good as I’d hoped but decent. You have to remember, I’m from a part of the country that was the best barbeque in the world! They couldn’t help it if they just didn’t know how to cook up some good ‘ole chopped pork. Oh how I miss you, Full Moon!
What a wonderful day it was! We both really enjoyed ourselves and I loved being out in such a secluded part of the country Once we ate, we walked around Riudoso for a bit then went back to the room where we took a well-deserved nap.
On sunday, we packed up and went back home. On the way, we went through White Sands. I had never been there so we stopped and drove through the park. There were alot of families out, enjoying the sun and sand. We parked the car and climbed up one of the dunes. I wished we could have stayed longer than we did, I would have loved to sled down the dune!
I really love my husband, he knows exactly what I like and can be the sweetest person in the world. I really enjoyed our trip and hope y’all enjoyed reading about it.
Blogs and Apps

I’ve only had my blog a couple of days but I’m already quite enamored with it. I had actually started one with blogger but then remembered that I had a WordPress app on my I-Phone and so thought I would switch over before I got in too deep with that other site.
Yes, I own an I-Phone, as evidenced in the picture on my post about the vinegarroon. And, not only am I one of those annoying people who drone on and on about the wonders of Le I-Phone, I actually USE mine beyond calls or playing solitaire. Some nights, when I can’t sleep, I will lay in bed and browse the App Store. Now, I learned long ago that the surest way to light Mr. Hourigan on fire was to actually PAY for an app. So, I browse the free ones and pick up all sorts of things. Hince the aforementioned WordPress app, despite not having a blog or account at the time!
The spectrum of apps I have run from games to picture apps. Some of the more interesting ones include an app called Baby Scratch. Now, Baby Scratch consists of a mini record player and samples so that you can make your own party mixes and rap songs, yo! I also have a couple of football apps, RTR, and a metronome/tuner. You know, for those times when I want to break out the guitar and jam on the fly. Stitchminder is a great knitting app. It’s only function is to serve as a stitch counter and placeholder. One of the more odd is a self-hypnosis app which helps you fall asleep and be less stressed. Does it work, you ask? Well, apparently not as well as advertised. I mean, I AM trolling the app store at 1 or 2 in the morning.
I do try to clean up my phone every couple of months or so, deleting those that don’t see any action. Besides my apps, I have ALOT of music, songs and video (800 plus), and loads of pictures that I’ve taken. I keep notes too, I have pages of those.
Whether or not I will become as enthralled with this blog as I am with my I-Phone remains to be seen. I would like to think that I will. There is something very intriguing about expressing myself in this medium. Yesterday, I discovered a website called Plinky.com where you can have it generate an idea for you to write about. I gave it a try and I sort of like it. It asked what your favorite comfort food was and I wrote a blurb about my love of black-eyed peas and cornbreat, yum! Not only will it have a suggestion of a topic to write about, it will also find a picture based on some word tags that you give it and generate the picture in your post! Pretty cool, I thought. Of course, one of the tag words was cornbread and, wow…it attached a really nice picture of some cornbread. Plus, it gave me multiple pictures of cornbread to choose from.
Tomorrow Jay and I are planning on going out of town tomorrow for my birthday to Ruidoso (pronounced ReoDoeSo). He took me up there last year and it’s just the coolest town. It’s up in the mountains and its very quaint, lots of shopping in town and, depending on the season, outdoor activities. Of course during the summer months there is the typical things you would associate with the outdoors; golf, horseback riding, fishing, etc. We’re hoping to do some fishing and enjoy the chamber music festival they are having this weekend.
Maybe I’ll finally use that WordPress blog on my I-Phone!

I would have to say, blackeyed peas and cornbread with plenty of other veggies. After moving to a different part of the country, having this occasionally really makes me a little less homesick!
Vinegarroon, oh how I love thee!

Last night, after supper, we were sitting out on the patio, having a few drinks and enjoying the beautiful evening. It was cool, a little cloudy, and the moon was just beginning to rise above the mountains. So, as we are sitting there, listening to some music and chatting, Misty began barking and lunging at something along the side of the house. I really didn’t pay any attention to it as she is a quirky dog and likes to do that very thing at shadows. Jay investigated and urged me to come look. Well, from previous experience I knew this could be trouble so I cautiously walked over. Well, it turns out a vinegarroon was on the side of the house. What’s a vinegarroon you say? Well, it ain’t no cookie, my friends!
Mr. Vinegarroon! Or, as it’s scientific name, the Thelyphonida. Vinegarroon is pronounced the same as Macaroon, just put vinegar in place of the maca and you’ve got it. Vinegarroon’s are so named due to their horrible smell when squashed. They are also known as Whip Scorpions because of the whip like antenna on their rear. All I know is that they are very, very scary looking and, despite their lack of venom, I didn’t want any part of it. Of course, that didn’t stop me from running into the house for my trusty Nikon and taking a few pictures!
And, just to give you an idea of the size of these critters, here’s a second picture I took with Jay holding my I-Phone alongside it.
Part of living here is coming to the realization that this is not a tamed civilaztion. It can be dangerous here, with cayotes, mountain lions, snakes, etc. You can’t just be-bop out to the car without really looking at your surroundings. Going outside requires putting on good footwear, you can’t just run out in your bare feet or in flip flops. Cactus spurs, snakes, bugs…ugh, they’ve really cramped my style, if you know what I mean. Shortly after I got out here, I begged Jay for some cowboy boots. Not because I really thought I would actually need them but because I thought they were so cute. I mean, I was out WEST! One really needed some boots, and a hat, in order to fit in, right? Well people, let me tell you that you actually DO need a good pair of work boots to protect your feet and legs from a possible scorpion sting or a snake bite. You also need a good hat to protect you from the sun because that sun is HOT and it will burn you up in a New York minete. I have alot more respect for the outdoors now.
A little about me…

Hello to all and cheers to my first blog post! I really should have done this back in December when I first moved out to New Mexico but, I just never thought about it. As many of you know, I’ve had alot of adventures while I’ve been here. Some scary and some amazing but all very interesting. I’ve lived alot of places in my life but I have never lived in the desert.
We live outside of Las Cruces, New Mexico in a small community called Talavera. It’s located between the Tortugas Mountains and the Organ Mountain Range. Until we sell our house in Alabama, we will be living with my husband J’s parents. They were kind enough to open their home to us, which has been really wonderful. I am not working at the moment so I have alot of time to indulge in some hobbies and other opportunities. I take care of our 4 dogs, our birds and help with Donna and Tim’s horses.
Living where we do can be challenging at times. While more houses are being built out in this area, it still lacks some of the modern conveniences which I was used to. For one, we live on a dirt road so your vehicle stays dirty. Not that I’m complaining, we don’t really have a “dainty” type vehicle, unless you count the mustang
We have considered building out here, maybe near J’s parents I would love it, but I do want a garage! Oooooh, yes….a garage is a must. Unless you have a garage to keep your vehicle in, desert rats could get into the engine compartment and eat the wiring! I’m not kidding, Donna and Tim have had to replace wiring on their vehicle’s a couple of times. (The have several vehicles but only a 2 car garage) I’ve even seen one! The other evening, we pulled up to the house and I saw a cute little bunny near the back of our SUV. As I exclaimed at how cute it was, J laughed and corrected me. Yes, dear readers, it was one of the biggest rats I had ever seen! Ugh, I made sure he got out of the car first to make sure it wasn’t there.
Another challange is the lack of cell service at the house. It’s horrible, most of the time calls don’t come through. Dropped calls are a guarentee and making a call is just frustrating. So, I wait until I go into town to make calls. When J first came out here, he tried to tell me but I thought he just didn’t want to talk that long!! lol! Little did I know and now that I do, I feel bad for getting mad at him for not calling me when I thought he should. AT&T doesn’t provide land line service here, it’s Qwest which is just horrible. We do have interenet through Qwest which is decent but the signal will ebb and wane which has caused both J and I to use quite a few imaginative phrases when we’ve been playing our favorite online game, World of Warcraft. But, we can’t really complain, we do have internet and that’s a major plus. Else, I’d have to just go back to our house in Alabama. Being cut off from the world just out and out sucks. Sorry, there just isn’t another phrase which comes close to the frustration of not being able to pick up my phone and call my son or my Mother or my friends.
